What is the goal of a knee brace?

The goal of functional knee bracing is to allow the patient to maintain or return to their "normal" lifestyle. It does not cure the osteoarthritis disease. However, some recent studies have suggested that the severities of the symptoms associated with osteoarthritis can be reduced with utilization of a functional knee brace. This is accomplished by decreasing the forces that go through the joint. Some functional braces also provide support to an unstable knee, which is commonly associated with osteoarthritis.
